Soccer Betting Basics

If you're new to soccer betting or have recently just started to get serious about making smart bets instead of just relying on your hunches or feelings, here's a useful checklist to make sure you get take all the important factors into consideration.

  1. Team Form
Check for the team's recent form. This usually means the last 5 or 6 matches. Qualify the team's wins or losses against who they were playing with. Did they win most of their recent games but lost only the match where they faced top teams? Read the post match reports if you can. Did they lose because they were unlucky even though they played well, etc?
Form is a major factor in predicting soccer match outcomes.
  2. Class
Class refers to the quality of a team's players. Class is often known intuitively - Arsenal, Man United, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid are top class teams. They often have the best players in the world. Classs can also be computed using ranking systems like Power rankings, etc, which computes a team's long-term rate of wins and losses.
  3. Head-to-Head
Look up the historical statisitics between the 2 teams. Is the weaker team for some reason, the bogey team of the favourite? Are the results evenly balanced between the 2 clubs with the home team usually having the edge over the other?
  4. Motivation
Another major factor in predicting soccer match winners. Is this a must-win game for the team you want to back? Are they fighting relegation or for a Champions League spot?
Is the manager under pressure and in danger of losing his job if his team loses fails to register yet another win?
  5. Team News
Who's injured, who's suspended and which star striker has fallen out with the manager? Keeping abreast of team news ensures you know the intricate details going on in a team and might give tell you why the team playing this week might not be the same that won/lost last week.
  6. Team Schedule

Commendations

"Your picks are great, very consistent returns on ROI but I'm still waiting to relive the very excellent winning run we had in Oct 2005. We came close a few times but I'm looking forward to breaking that record!"

- Lee Behrens, Portsmouth

"I've been a member for more than 3 months and I'm crossing my fingers but so far, there have been no adverse runs which I've experienced with other services I've signed up with."

- Jon Potash
